2015-07-16 - MT - Day 50 - Malta to Havre
It was going to be a long day, ninety-two miles. I left camp at 7:45 am after most of the others went to get the free breakfast. After cycling thirteen miles alone, I joined an ever-increasing paceline into rest stop 1. I ate so many of the breakfast's leftover potato wraps: addicting potato cubes filling the insides of rolled pancakes. With full stomachs, we started a paceline towards rest stop 2 that soon split apart. Alex, Reed, Nils, Libby and I ended up together. After a brief insect-infested rest stop midway, we reached rest stop 2.
Lucas joined us for the next leg where I think as a group we got pretty sleepy. I know that I was. The warm temperature and full meal at the stop before really hit me. I was lucky to have some caffeine in one of my bottles. Reed rubbed up against Nils' back wheel and fell while a car was passing on our left. Good thing was, everyone was paying attention and no one got hurt. Libby was leading at the time but came back to check on us. Soon after, we lost her. The wind strengthened over time. Lucas finished the leg with a three mile pull at 16-17 mph into rest stop 3 against 30 mph winds. We all decided to go slower after that. I joined a large group and helped pull much of the way into Havre. The church there was lovely. We had a great shower in a full sized pool before turning in for the night.
