2015-06-24 - IA - Day 28 - Oxford Junction to Elkader
People left early to try to beat the possible storm with predicted seventy mile per hour winds and hail an inch and a half in diameter. I left around 7 AM with Nils and Alex. We rode a lot of the way together to the first rest stop where I ate Subway for breakfast. Reed, Libby, and I rode most of the way from there to rest stop 2, passing by Al and Will along the way. At the second rest stop, Alex, Libby, Nils and I visited the nearby Goodwill store where we tried to find pieces for our "Fromme" outfits. Fromme would take place in Fargo for us riders -- a funny version of Prom.
On the way to rest stop 3, Alex and Nils dropped me. I bought $2 ice cream to eat and paid fifty cents for a game guitar for my Fromme costume. I left this stop late and, feeling motivated, rode really fast. After I caught up with Svetlana, she drafted off me for half the way. I also passed Zach, the Dubois couple, Libby, and Nils along the way through gorgeous valleys and impressive churches. I finished strong, breathing heavily by the time I reached the church we would be staying at. There was free bread and peanut butter on the table, and a large supply of yogurt and milk in the fridge provided for us. A woman with MS saw our sign and was moved to tears upon hearing about our journey. She went back home and came back with a lot of treats. Showers were communal in the nearby pool where kids were running rampant. I enjoyed playing multiple games of Mafia, which was a lot of fun. Eventually we all went to bed in the basement and first floor of the church.
